9th Annual Hamptons Happening Raises Almost $400,000
Cancer research got a $400,000 boost on July 27 during the Annual Hamptons Happening, a highlight of the Hamptons social calendar. In its 9-year history, the event has raised close to $3 million for cancer research.
As the evening’s 400 guests entered the gates of the gracious Bridgehampton, New York, estate of Maria and Kenneth Fishel, they could see the huge 8,000-square-foot tent awaiting them.
In and around the tent, the 9th Annual “A Hamptons Happening” Feast with Chef Todd English (and friends) made good on its promise—it was indeed a feast. One of the evening’s honorees, Chef Todd English, and five of his signature restaurants held center stage under the tent—surrounded by tables featuring the mouth-watering signature dishes of about 30 other chefs and restaurants.
The fashion world was also represented in the evening’s other honoree, Ruth Finley, creator of the Fashion Calendar. Both Ms. Finley and Chef English spoke passionately about their belief in the importance of cancer research. Ms. Finley told the crowd that they were “saving lives tonight.” And Chef English said, “It’s unfortunate that we have to be here because of cancer, but I’m here to help make this thing go away.”
Chris Wragge, of CBS2-News, the evening’s em-cee, who also served up enthusiasm for cancer research, said,“If there is a cure for cancer, this is the Foundation that will find it.” He and Chef English held an impromptu auction of a Todd English dinner “in-your-home” for 12, which went for $10,000.
The evening featured music by DJ Theory and a live and silent auction presented by Grandstand. Some of the hottest auction items included a stay at an Italian villa and a swim clinic with Olympian Ryan Lochte.
“It was a great evening for cancer research,” says Samuel Waxman, MD, Founder and CEO of the SWCRF. “The money we raised will enable us to award three new individual grants to researchers. Every dollar we raise helps us in our quest to beat cancer.”
