Terms of Grant The Foundation will support such inter-laboratory efforts through the SWCRF grants that have a two year term, which may be extended to three years upon demonstration of progress and collaboration. Beyond these three year terms the Foundation will consider continued funding through bridging grants or Institute Without Walls program grants that may be renewed on a yearly term, based on continuing scientific progress and adherence to the ideals listed above. In addition the Foundation will support several working groups through travel grants.

Background The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF), founded in 1976, is a non-profit organization dedicated to conducting basic, translational and clinical research on the causes of cancer with the goal of developing scientifically targeted cancer treatments. The SWCRF Institute Without Walls funds and trains scientists, fosters collaboration and is instrumental in organizing international conferences based on the premise that cancer is reversible.

The SWCRF also provides ongoing support to research programs at the Shanghai Institute of Hematology. In 2002, a competitive grant program was established, expanding the scope of the Foundation’s research mission to encourage interactive, high-quality research with the intent of developing new therapies for cancer through the understanding of the mechanism of the development of the disease. The number of funded grants has increased each year. In 2008 SWCRF will fund a significant number of individual grants. Further bridging grants will be awarded to several presently funded SWCRF investigators as members of the Institute Without Walls.

Who Should Apply Invitations have been sent out to the directors of major cancer research programs requesting the submission of applications. Applicants must be established investigators with a tenure track appointment holding as Principal Investigator at least one grant from a major funding source such as the NIH, NSF, DOD, ACS. The goal of our program is to leverage existing cancer research expertise into translational and collaborative cancer research.

Priority will be given to:

• Proposals addressing promising new areas of study for the applicant, not yet funded by the National Institutes of Health or other major granting agencies.

• Studies that will directly impact the understanding of the mechanisms of cancer and its treatment.

• Translational studies involving the clinical treatment of individuals with cancer.

Program grants should demonstrate collaboration already in progress with need for further support.

What Research is Most Applicable: • Development of transcription based therapy-agents in cancer
• Development of new therapies/pathways to overcome defective differentiation of cancer cells
• Selective apoptotic agents and pathways in cancer
• Targeting aberrant signaling pathways characteristic of the malignant phenotype
View
Experimental design options include: • Modeling of human cancer in animals and the eventual use of the model for therapeutic trials (Example: Use of arsenic and retinoic acid in the treatment of animal models of leukemia)
• Measuring parameters of the molecular response of human cancer to therapies (Example: Use of microarrays to determine the genetics or proteomic change of tumor that do or do not respond to therapy)
• Pre-clinical or clinical trials with proof of principle surrogate and/or clinical markers
• Discovery of anti-cancer agents by rational design after target identification and validation
View
Funding An initial, two-year grant will consist of:
• $100,000 per year of direct cost
• $15,000 indirect cost
• A total of $230,000 over two years
• Upon completion of two years, review of progress and approval by the grants review committee, a third year of funding may be considered.

Review and Award All applications are evaluated by the SWCRF Grants Review Committee, comprised of members of the Scientific Advisory Committee and independent outside reviewers. Final review and approval rests with the Board of Directors. Funding of awards is based on the priority score awarded each application, the recommendations of the Grants Review Committee, the Scientific Advisory Committee, and the availability of funds. Funding will commence on July 1, 2008.
