Neither sweltering heat nor torrential downpours could deter loyal supporters of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) from hitting the links at The Creek Club in Locust Valley, NY, on July 14, to raise $200,000 in support of the SWCRF’s new Aging and Cancer research initiative. Players braved near-100-degree temperatures to play in the 34th annual tournament, which celebrated the lifetime achievements of Jim McLean, a renowned golf instructor who runs the top golf school in the nation. McLean, whose high-profile students include Erik Compton, Cristie Kerr and Gary Woodland, among others, received the SWCRF Lifetime Achievement in Golf Award from SWCRF founder and CEO Samuel Waxman, MD.

Hosted once again by SWCRF board member Tony Shogren and Cynthia Shogren, the daylong outing treated guests to a delicious brunch sponsored by M&T Bank. After the noon shotgun, foursomes ventured onto the course, enjoying a lunch supported by Heritage Strategies LLC and York Restoration Corporation. Mr. McLean, accompanied by Dr. Waxman, stopped by holes to meet players.

The guests rushed back to the clubhouse after a fierce thunderstorm – complete with lightning – erupted from the day’s buildup of humidity, but the sun broke through the clouds minutes later as guests traveled to the awards reception and dinner. Event co-chairs – and SWCRF board members – Dennis Herman and Gary Jacob delivered welcoming comments and introduced Dr. Waxman, who congratulated them on spearheading the success of the fundraiser. Dr. Waxman then introduced Guy Yocom, senior writer at Golf Digest, who shared stories about his friendship with Mr. McLean. Upon receiving his award, Mr. McLean told humorous anecdotes from his teaching career and thanked the guests for supporting the important work of the SWCRF. He pledged his support for the SWCRF Aging & Cancer program that targets minimally toxic therapies for cancer patients over the age of 50.

Dennis Herman then led a live auction for two deluxe golf experiences with Jim McLean. Ed Kaminsky emerged the top bidder for a lesson, lunch and a game of golf with Mr. McLean at his school at the Trump National Doral resort in Miami with a bid of $3,500. Ralph Bernstein took the three-day school for two with Mr. McLean at the Trump Doral in Miami with a bid of $5,500.
Kaminsky and Bernstein also fared well in the day’s competition when their foursome, which included Pat Fogarty and Dana Pike, took 1st Gross. First Net went to John Bazzano, Jim Kurdeck, Jason Berger and George Ross. Top performers in the individual contests included Eric Schiff, who came closest to the pin #4 and #8, Robert Murphy, who came closest to pin #11 and hit the longest drive at #16, and Matthew Webb, who came closest to pin #17.
