Past Workman Award Recipient Appointed as National Cancer Institute Deputy Director
NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation congratulates Douglas Lowy, M.D., for his appointment as Deputy Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), which was announced by new NCI Director Harold Varmus, M.D., at a town hall meeting at the National Institutes of Health on July 12.

Dr. Lowy is the Deputy Director of the NCI Center for Cancer Research and chief of the Laboratory of Cellular Oncology. He and John Schiller, Ph.D., led critical research into the development of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.  In 2006, both men received the David T. Workman Memorial Award from the Waxman Foundation for their breakthrough work.

“Douglas Lowy is not only a dear friend and colleague, but someone whom I consider a true pioneer in cancer research,” said Samuel Waxman, M.D., scientific director of the Foundation. “I offer my sincerest best wishes to Doug and am certain that he will serve the public with great passion as Deputy Director of the NCI.”

Gwen Darien, executive director of the Foundation added, “On behalf of the Waxman Foundation, we would like to congratulate Dr. Lowy for his dedication and commitment to cancer research.”
