New Therapies for Leukemia
Impact
Better outcomes for patients with very poor prognosis
Summary of Research
Our research program is based on the premise that current therapies for leukemia do not usually eradicate a key subset of the disease, which results in tumor relapse after conventional treatment and ultimately death. Therefore, the focus of our studies is to design and test new drugs that more effectively destroy all tumor cells in patients with leukemia. To this end, we have identified a naturally-occurring drug called parthenolide, which is found in a plant known as feverfew. Using parthenolide as a starting point, we have generated a drug that is currently being tested in clinical trials for treatment of patients with leukemia and related forms of blood cancer. |
