Team Waxman – Peter Bartlett

Total Funds Raised: $46,137

Age: 23

Bio: Peter Bartlett is running the NYC Marathon for his grandmother Mimi (pictured at left with Peter) who, after battling liver cancer for just over a year, passed away earlier this summer. She passed on the day Peter ran his first NY Road Runner race, the Queens Half.

“I’ve known for a while now that I wanted to compete in the NY Marathon this year, but when my grandmother lost her battle with cancer, I knew I had to do it for a charity,” he said. “It’s the perfect way to honor her, and this is the perfect charity.”

Bartlett recognizes that more and more families are forced to deal with the effects of cancer, and is looking forward to contributing to the effort to find a cure.

He has been running competitively for close to 10 years now, including four years on Princeton University’s track team, but never attempted a marathon before. Despite his inexperience at this distance, he has lofty goals, and hopes to place in the top 100 and break 2:40. He’s been putting in his miles training, and he cannot wait to cross the finish line in November!

Team Waxman – Gabe Rose

Fundraising Goal: $3,500

Total Funds Raised: $3,724

Age: 26

Bio: For the second consecutive year, Gabe Rose will run the New York City Marathon on behalf of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation to honor his late Uncle, James Delphin, who passed away in 2007 after a long battle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer. Gabe will run in tribute to his uncle’s immediate family, his Aunt Lisa and six cousins (Caitlin, Emma, Naomi, Caleb, Jacob, and Collette).

This is Gabe’s third consecutive New York City marathon. After completing the race in 2008, he approached Waxman’s Millennial Society about the opportunity to run on behalf of the foundation. A match was made, and the rest is history. He is extremely proud to represent the organization.

Team Waxman – Elliot Weinberg

Fundraising Goal: $3,500

Total Funds Raised: $3,807

Age: 27

Bio: Before last year, Elliot Weinberg would never have considered himself a runner. An avid boxer, Weinberg decided to change his workout routine on a whim and get in shape by running through the streets of Manhattan. “I started running outside because it allowed me to explore the city,” he said. But soon his short jogs along the Westside Highway turned into 8-10 mile runs over a few short months. He’s even up to running 18-20 miles when he feels like running longer distances. “It started out as a conditioning method, but running has quickly become a passion and a new found joy,” said Weinberg.

After friends suggested that he consider running a marathon, he decided to enter the ING New York City Marathon and will be running in support of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation. Having attended past fundraising events through the Millennial Society of the Waxman Foundation, Weinberg is familiar with the unique scientific concept that drives the Foundation—reprogramming cancer cells to deliver minimally toxic treatments to cancer patients.

Weinberg has been touched by cancer through the lives of family members and friends. “Unfortunately, cancer affects the lives of many people,” he said. “By running in the New York City marathon this fall, I hope to do what I can to help the cause to find a cure for a disease that affects so many.”

Team Waxman – Ben Hieger

Fundraising Goal: $3,500

Total Funds Raised: $2,700

Age: 35

Bio: Ben Hieger heard about Team Waxman through fellow co-worker and Waxman teammate Bryan Rodman. Though Ben has completed two half-marathons in the past, he has never run in a full marathon. The 26.219-mile course will be tough to complete, he admits, but he’s up for the challenge. “My biggest goal is to finish the marathon before P. Diddy’s time of 4 hours and 14 minutes,” he says.

Ben is up to running 10 miles and plans to ramp up his training in the next few months. He considers the hard work all worth it in the end when he thinks about the end goal—raising money for cancer research.

He is running in support of his girlfriend, who lost her father to cancer last year, and in honor of friends and family who have been diagnosed with the disease, including his brother—a six-year survivor of leukemia—and a co-worker who just recently finished treatment. Ben
says he’s come to realize that cancer can strike at any age, so running in the ING New York City marathon is his small part to do what he can to help find a cure.

Team Waxman – Kate Forlenza

Fundraising Goal: $3,500

Total Funds Raised: $3,660

Age: 29

Bio: Kate Forlenza is a new addition to Team Waxman this year. Though she’s never run in a marathon before, she said she’s always wanted to check that off of her bucket list. Thanks to her co-workers and fellow teammates—Ben Hieger, Bryan Rodman and Mike Wasilewski—Forlenza will soon have the chance.

“I decided to run because it has always been my goal to run the NYC marathon by the time I turn 30,” she said. “I also want to run for the people in my life who have been recently diagnosed with cancer and who are long-time survivors.”

Having only run short-distance races in the past, Forlenza is not daunted by the challenge set before her. Training has been tough, but she is slowly getting there. “Every week gets a little easier. I have been wanting to do this for such a long time, and that is what I keep telling myself to push me to the next mile,” said Forlenza.

“I think the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation is a great organization. I want to do what ever I can to help the fight.”
