I have observed as Dr. Waxman moved from treating cancer patients to trying to demystify cancer in the research lab. In fact, our Board of Directors encouraged and endorsed Dr. Waxman's application of his knowledge from working with patients to directing basic, translational and clinical cancer research dedicated to developing selective cell targeted therapies. This approach is based on two premises: programming cancerous cells to die and reversing cancer at the molecular level. These have resulted in a unique effort to rid patients of their cancer with less toxic, site-specific treatments.

How else does the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation stand apart? We strongly believe in collaboration and our "institute without walls" reflects this. From Canada, China and England to throughout the United States, we require all Foundation-supported investigators to share their results. Our desire to eradicate this common disease overrides any pride in authorship. The goal is a cure, and scientifically based research and collaboration are key.
